Context Menus and Data Navigation

Right-click context menus are provided in numerous places within the Data Discovery application to not only facilitate short cuts to certain processes but also to add enhanced functionality that would be hard to provide otherwise:

  • The context menus attached to grids, charts and maps provide "short-cut" querying capabilities that make traversing and navigating the cube's data and metadata easier and more direct. They also provide access to functions that are determined by the result-set itself, rather than the more static metadata of the cube (for example cell actions). Further, chart menus provide access to series editing that is inaccessible through the ribbon interface.
  • The context menus attached to the metadata trees (selection, hierarchy and element) provide short-cut alternatives to drag-and-drop functionality in some cases, and alternatives to manual element selections (via functions) in others.

Context Menu Functions

The following tables itemized the main context menus in the application, and provide a brief explanation of their functions.

Grid and Chart Context Menus
Common Data Discovery Functions
Function Image Notes
Drill Down Drills down the current element to its child elements. Disabled if there are no children
Drill Up Drills up to its parent's level and returns parent and its 'siblings'
Drill to Level Drills down to the descendants of a selected member at the level chosen from the sub menu
Dice Takes current element and filters/sub-sets by that element; while putting the selected hierarchy in its place (see below).
Dimensions Represent cube dimensions in the DICE sub-menu
Attribute hierarchies Represent attribute hierarchies in the DICE sub-menu
User hierarchies Represent user hierarchies in the DICE sub-menu
Dice hierarchy Levels Represents the levels of a given hierarchy in the DICE sub-menu
Expand Down Expand the current element to show itself and its child elements. Disabled if there are no children.
Collapse Up Collapses and hides the current element's exposed children.
Member Select - Focus Keeps the selected element and removes all others in the hierarchy. Multi-select Focus allows the selection of multiple elements
Focus and Ascendants Keeps the selected element and returns all its parent elements up to the top of the hierarchy tree
Focus and Descendants Keeps the selected elements and returns the entire tree of descendants at ALL levels below this element
Eliminate Eliminates the selected element, leaving all others in the hierarchy. Multi-select Elimination allows the de-selection of multiple elements. eliminating entire rows or columns allows for ragged query structures.
Multi Element Operations Multiple Element Operations - for doing some of the above functions on multiple elements at once. Click here for more.
Quick Sort

Provides a context sensitive sorting of the rows or columns based on the values as the sort criteria

Provides a context sensitive sorting of the rows or columns based on the labels of the element as the sort criteria

Quick Filter Provides a context sensitive filtering of the rows or columns based on the selected elements as the filter criteria. Filters are either the TopCount / BottomCount or TopPercent / BottomPercent
Actions Exposes cube defined 'actions' on the rows, columns or cells (see below)
Action Types Represent DRILLTHROUGH, URL/ Reporting Service and Row-set actions respectively in the Actions sub-menu
Zoom in Only for data cells (grids or charts), represents a focus on the current cell and its matching row and column elements.
Conditional Formatting This allows users to set conditional formatting to specific rows or columns on a grid
Annotate For annotating cells, reports and books.

Chart Context Menu - additional items
Function Image Notes
Series Edit Opens the Series Edit dialog box (for secondary axis and combo chart operations).
Primary/Secondary Axis Moves the selected series from the primary to the secondary axis and vice versa
Bring forward/backwards Moves a chart series in front or behind the other plotted series in the chart

See Charts for more.

NOTE: Consumer users do not have access to the Series Editing context menu items.

Report Wide Context Menu
Function Image Notes
Pivot Pivots or swaps the selections on the rows with the columns and vice versa
Hide Non Empty Row/Columns Hides blank or empty rows and/or columns from the result set
Filter Rows/Columns Provides a double filter for the query on either the rows, columns or both (e.g. Top-Count)
Sort Rows/Columns Provides a sorting mechanism for the query on either rows, columns or both.
Totals

Applies totals to the query in various formations (row, column or grid).
Copy Content Copies content to the Clipboard (effectively export).

See Filters, Sorting and Non-Empty filters for more.

Metadata Tree Context Menus
Selection and Hierarchies Panels Common Context Menu
Function Image Notes
View Elements Opens the Elements panel so the individual elements of the selected hierarchy can be viewed (does not apply to level nodes)
Add to Slicers Adds or moves the selected node to the slicers zone in the selection panel
Add to Columns Adds or moves the selected node to the columns zone in the selection panel
Add to Rows Adds or moves the selected node to the rows zone in the selection panel.
Add to Sub-sets Adds or moves the selected node to the sub-sets zone in the selection panel (does not apply to level nodes).
Bin Runs the binning wizard for this hierarchy.
Cluster Runs the clustering wizard for this hierarchy.
Predict Runs the prediction wizard for this hierarchy. Only active for users with admin rights to the model.
New Base Measure Creates a new base measure for this model. See here for more. Only active for users with admin rights to the model.
New Model Hierarchy Creates a new user hierarchy for this model. See here for more. Only active for users with admin rights to the model.
Hierarchy Type Allows the user to set the hierarchy or level type.

See Hierarchy and Selection panels for more.

Selection Panel Context Menu
Function Image Notes
Move up/down Moves the selected hierarchy within a given selection zone further up or down the display order. Really only affects slices, columns and rows.
Remove Item Removes the selected hierarchy from the selection. If in slicers, user is prompted on preferred action. For Columns and Rows, the default element for the removed hierarchy is selected.

Element Panel Context Menu
Function Image Notes
Descendants Short-cut to formulaic selection functions that will allow the user to select: descendants of the selected element by level (as per below); the pyramid of descendants of the selected element; or to select only the last (leaf) descendants of the selected element
Available Levels within the hierarchy The listing of available levels below a given element that can be used to formulaically select elements
All Descendants Selecting the entire sub-tree of descendants below the selected element
Leaf Descendants Selecting the last or LEAF elements of the sub-tree below the selected element
Actions Exposes cube defined 'actions' for the element
New Member Calculation Adds a new custom member definition to the selected hierarchy optionally using the hierarchy selections as the source for the member equation. Users are presented with a menu driven wizard for picking some predefined formulations.
New Custom Set Adds a new custom set definition to the selected hierarchy optionally using the hierarchy selections as the source for the member selections
Custom Measure Wizard A wizard for defining simple custom measures. (Visible in the measures dimension only).
New Parameter Adds a new parameter definition to the selected hierarchy

See the Elements panel for more.
